What to see in Tirana

Tirana is the capital city of Albania. It has a long history, dating back to the time of Illyrian tribes and the Dardanian State. Modern day Tirana was founded in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha Bushati, a commander in the Ottoman army who became governor of a region that included modern-day Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia.

It was renamed "Tiranë" by Ottomans due to its proximity to Mount Tahtanë. In modern times it's become a bustling city with plenty to see and do!

Skanderbeg Square

Skanderbeg Square is the main square in Tirana and named after George Kastrioti, also known as Skanderbeg. He was a national hero who fought against the Ottoman Empire during its expansion into Europe in the 15th century. The statue of Skanderbeg at the center of this square depicts him with his sword raised high above his head ready for battle.

The statue was unveiled in 1967 and is one of the most frequently visited sites in Tirana. The square also features a number of fountains, which are popular with children and adults alike, as well as some cafes and restaurants.

Bunk'Art

Bunk'Art is a museum of contemporary art, located in the former First Primary School of Tirana. It was opened in 2000 and has since become one of Albania's most visited museums.

The collection includes paintings by Albanian artists as well as works by international artists who have been invited to participate in the exhibitions held at Bunk'Art over the years.

National History Museum

The National History Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in Albania's history and culture. The museum has a collection of thousands of items, including coins, stamps and medals; an archaeological section with statues from ancient times; and an art section that includes sculptures from medieval times as well as paintings from more recent centuries.

The museum also has a small cinema that screens films about Albania's history and culture. The building itself is worth seeing, as it was designed by the Italian architect Gherardo Bosio in 1912.

Mt Dajti National Park

Mt Dajti National Park is located in the north-western part of Tirana, and it's one of the city's most popular tourist destinations. The park has a waterfall, a lake and many hiking trails that can be used for walking or biking. It also has an observatory where you can enjoy views of Tirana and its surroundings. The park is home to many species of birds such as woodpeckers, pelicans, buzzards and hawks.

The park is also home to many different types of trees and flowers, which makes it a beautiful place for a stroll. The park has its own cafe where you can have lunch or dinner while enjoying the scenery.

Former Residence of Enver Hoxha

The former residence of Enver Hoxha is a museum that's worth a visit. It has a great view of Tirana, so you can enjoy it on a sunny day. It's one of the few museums that are worth visiting in Albania. The museum contains a collection of personal effects from Enver Hoxha, who was the leader of Albania from 1944 to 1985.

Tirana is a great place to visit

It's got plenty of things to see, do and eat. There are so many restaurants and cafes that you could easily get lost in them all day long! The city also has a lot of history: it was founded back in 1388 by Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg (aka Skanderbeg), who led Albania against Ottoman rule for 25 years until his death in 1468 at age 70.

He was later canonized as Saint George by Pope Clement XI on May 21st 1767 after being recognized as one of Europe's greatest heroes by Emperor Charles VI Habsburg at Vienna Congress 1815-1816 where he declared himself King George I of Albania; hence why today Albanians refer themselves as "Gjeorgjian" because they're proud descendants from this great man who fought so hard for their country!

To pay tribute to him there are many monuments and statues throughout Tirana including ones located near Tirana Castle where most tourists spend their time walking around admiring what other people have created over time.

Tirana is a great place to visit, and I hope this blog post helps you plan your trip!
