Tirana is the capital city of Albania. It has a long history, dating back to the time of Illyrian tribes and the Dardanian State. Modern day Tirana was founded in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha Bushati, a commander in the Ottoman army who became governor of a region that included modern-day Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia. It was renamed "Tiranë" by Ottomans due to its proximity to Mount Tahtanë.
