Things to do in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The former Yugoslavia isn’t known for being a tourist destination, but for those who can look past the recent history and political turmoil, there is a lot to explore in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The country has so much to offer from stunning landscapes and charming cities to friendly people and delicious food. I spent two weeks travelling around Bosnia, visiting Sarajevo, Mostar, Ilidza, Blagaj and Pocitelj among others. It was one of the most enjoyable trips I’ve ever been on!

Sarajevo

Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country that is located in the Balkan region of Europe. It has a population of over 300,000 people and is home to the University of Sarajevo. The city was first mentioned in historical documents in 1461 when it was ruled by Ottoman Empire before being taken over by Austro-Hungarian Empire during 19th century until WWI ended in 1918 when Bosnia became part of Yugoslavia until WWII began after which it declared independence from Yugoslavia (in 1992) but still maintains close ties with Serbia today!

Ilidza

Ilidža is one of the municipalities of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ilidža is a city district in the center of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The municipality includes several neighborhoods: Ilidža I (old town), Ilidža II (new town), Kovačići, Ladjevac and Vojkovići.

Ilidža is home to the Olympic Park and many sports facilities, including a stadium and swimming pool. It is also close to the popular Bistrik area of Sarajevo, which is a shopping district with many restaurants, cafes and shops.

Mostar

Mostar is a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It's the largest city in Herzegovina, and it's known for its bridges and the Old Bridge. The Old Bridge is the symbol of Mostar--it was built in 1566 by Mimar Hayruddin, an architect from Turkey who designed it to look like Istanbul's Maiden's Tower.

The Bosnian War (1992-1995) destroyed much of this historic city; however, reconstruction efforts have been ongoing since then and today it has regained its former glory as one of Europe's most beautiful destinations.

Blagaj

Blagaj is a village in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located on the Buna River, near Mostar. Blagaj was once part of an important medieval pilgrimage route from Constantinople to Jerusalem. Today it's most famous for its 16th century mosque and pilgrimage site (which draws thousands of visitors every year), but if you're looking for some more off-the-beaten path things to do in Bosnia & Herzegovina, then Blagaj should definitely be on your list!

Pocitelj

Pocitelj is a small town in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina, known for its beautiful nature, rivers and lakes. It's a great place to visit during the summer months as it has many activities for people who love sports like swimming or kayaking.

Pocitelj also has some interesting buildings that can be visited such as St Nicholas Church (Crkva sv Nikole), which was built in 1742 by Austrian architect Jakob Isakovic on an older church from 14th century AD - St Anthony's Monastery (Manastir Sv Antonije) with beautiful wall paintings inside its chapel dating back to 15th century AD - Our Lady's Church (Hodojska crkva).

Kravica Waterfall

Kravica Waterfall is a waterfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the municipality of Travnik on the Kravice river. It is the largest waterfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a height of 122 meters (400 feet).

Kravica Waterfall was created when locals built a dam to collect water for their mills at this location. The dam collapsed during heavy rains causing tons of rocks to fall into the gorge below forming this natural wonder which can be seen today!

Trebinje and Travnik

Trebinje is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the south of the country. It was once a medieval city that was destroyed during World War II. Today, it has become an attractive tourist destination for both visitors from around Europe and locals alike.

Travnik is another beautiful city located in Bosnia and Herzegovina's south region. It has been inhabited since Roman times - evidence suggests that there were settlements there as early as 1st century A.D., when it was part of the province of Dalmatia (now Croatia).

In conclusion, there are a lot of things to do in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Whether you're looking for a place to relax or adventure, we hope this list has given you some ideas on where to go next time you visit!
