Things to Do in Kalamata, Greece
If you are heading to Kalamata, you will be able to find plenty of things to do. Whether you want to see the Castle of Kalamata or you want to spend some time at the Church of the Holy Apostles, you will find that there are plenty of options available to you.
Almyros Beach
If you are planning a visit to Kalamata, you'll likely want to check out Almyros Beach. It's one of the most popular tourist beaches in the area and is one of the more impressive if you ask me. It is surrounded by the tallest mountain in the area, Taygetos, which creates beautiful coves of green that blend with the blue waters of the Gulf of Messinia.
Although the name Almyros is not exactly what you'd expect, the beach is not short on amenities. There's a changing cabin, a beach volley court, a lifeguard and more. While you're there, you can also indulge in a fancy cocktail at the bars in the Messinian Gulf.
The tidbit of all of this is that there are plenty of hotels, villas and apartments to choose from. This makes Almyros a prime destination for both tourists and locals. This beach is especially popular amongst families, couples and singles looking to relax in the sun.
Castle of Kalamata
Kalamata's Castle is a fortified structure that sits on top of a hill in the city of Kalamata in the Peloponnese. The castle overlooks a large area beneath it. It is an example of medieval fortification architecture.
The Castle of Kalamata was built in the early 13th century by Geoffrey I of Villehardouin. It is located on a rocky hill above the Nedontas River. It was used by various rulers over the centuries. It was first occupied by the Franks. In 1821, the Greek Revolution overthrew the Ottomans and the castle was seized by the Greeks.
The castle was severely damaged during the Turkish siege of Kalamata in 1825. It was eventually turned into ruins. There are several archaeologic sites on the site, including a Roman era cemetery.
The church is named after the Virgin Mary. It was originally referred to as the church of Farai, a city mentioned in Homeric Iliad. In the 6th century AD, on the ruins of the old city, a Christian church was built.
Church of the Holy Apostles
The Church of the Holy Apostles in Kalamata is a historic Greek church located in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It is also known as the Imperial Polyandreion. The cathedral was built in the Byzantine period and it is located in the historic center of the city. It is located near the Archaeological Museum of Messenia.
The church is dedicated to the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. It is a very beautiful Greek Orthodox church. It is one of the most important historical buildings in Greece. It is only second in size after the Hagia Sophia.
There are two temples within the church. The first one was constructed in the 11th century, while the other was built in the 17th-18th century. It is considered to be a magnificent example of neoclassical architecture.
It has a cross-in-square design and a bell tower in the northeast corner. There are frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1892, the church was coated in lime.
Restaurants
The city of Kalamata is a small, laid-back city that offers plenty of quaint eateries. Some restaurants have traditional Greek cuisine, while others offer a more modern, lounge-style dining experience.
The best gastronomic ambassador of Kalamata is Cardamom, which is located in the heart of the city's historical center. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere, despite being in a relatively small space. The menu changes occasionally, but you can count on classic, fresh Greek dishes.
Another popular Kalamata restaurant is the Oinopantopoleion, a local hangout that features a wide variety of local products. This restaurant first opened in 1958 and has survived multiple generations of owners. They also serve lunch until early evening.
The Luna Lounge is a popular spot for anyone who enjoys good food and drink. It's centrally located and has a diverse menu and wine list. You'll find a good selection of seating at the bar and cosy corners for people-watching.
