The city is situated on the north coast of Egypt, between the Red Sea and the Sinai Peninsula. The resort town is known for its clear waters and sandy beaches. It is also home to many coral reefs, which make for a perfect snorkelling spot.
Saint Catherine's Monastery
Saint Catherine's Monastery is one of the world's oldest monasteries. It is an Eastern Orthodox monastery located at the foot of Mount Sinai in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. It is considered the oldest continuously-inhabited Christian monastery in the world. Its library contains the largest collection of religious texts in the world.
The monastery has a history dating back seventeen centuries. The early church was constructed near the Burning Bush, which legend tells is where God appeared to Moses. The apse has a marble sarcophagus that holds the remains of Saint Catherine. The sarcophagus was donated to the monastery by Empress Catherine of Russia. The monastery is also home to a cemetery.
The Mosaic of the Transfiguration is another major treasure at Saint Catherine's Monastery. This mosaic was painted by Emperor Justinian I. It is separated from the apse by a gilded iconostasis.
The monastery library has over 2,000 manuscripts. These include ancient biblical texts and lost documents. The library's collections include manuscripts in the Indo-European and Semitic languages.
SS Thistlegorm dive
The SS Thistlegorm dive is one of the most popular underwater excursions in the world. The wreck is located in the Red Sea, near the Strait of Gubal. You can see it from the surface, but the best way to see it is by diving.
Thistlegorm was a British merchant navy ship that was sunk during World War II. It was on a voyage to drop off valuable cargo when it was attacked by a German bomber. It was brought to rest in the Strait of Gubal, but it lay undisturbed for 14 years before being discovered.
Thistlegorm is a well-preserved wreck with plenty of intact artifacts. It's also home to a variety of reef fish and colorful tropical sea life. Some of the most common are barracuda, moray eels, and tuna.
The SS Thistlegorm dive site is very popular and attracts both recreational and liveaboard divers. Most divers make a day trip to the site from Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada.
